But if the author was *always* in pain and struggling, with no possibility of victory or relief: no much deserved comfort... then he'd be more like Sisyphus. We *are* probably too comfortable (but I'm hobbit enough to be fine with that ;-) There's also magic in the comfortable contentment of being surrounded by family and friends and good food. It's a both/and, maybe?
